The New York University women's tennis team completed its first day of competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday, September 24, hosted by Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY.

In singles play, four Violets -- senior Laila El Dessouki, sophomores Flyora Shiyanova and Alice McGinty, and freshman Judy Kam -- won their first-round matches and advanced to the second round of the tournament. In Round Two, Shiyanova defeated University of Rochester's Camila Garcia 6-3, 6-2, and McGinty bested St. Lawrence University's Emily Wyman 6-4, 6-2. Both players will continue with Round Three play on Sunday.

In doubles play, the pairs of El Dessouki and Kam, and freshman Rupa Ganesh and McGinty, each defeated their first-round opponents. Ganesh and McGinty then defeated The College of New Jersey's Audrey Chen and Katelyn Hojelbane 8-2 to move onto Round Three.

"We played very well today," said NYU Head Coach Horace Choy. "Competition gets a little tougher tomorrow, but I'm still expecting good results."
