The New York University women's tennis team defeated Swarthmore College 7-2 on Saturday, February 25, in Swarthmore, PA.
The Violets won two of three doubles matches and five of six singles matches to account for the final margin.
A pair of NYU players - sophomore Alice McGinty and freshman Rupa Ganesh - won both their singles and doubles matches. McGinty picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win in #2 singles, and an 8-5 win in #2 doubles with partner Vanessa Scott. Ganesh earned a victory in #4 singles (6-2, 7-6), and then shut out Swarthmore's Maria Cuervo and Julia Gokhberg (8-0) with partner Judy Kam in #3 doubles.
"It was a good match against some strong competition," said NYU Head Coach Horace Choy.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Flyora Shiyanova defeated Emma Kassan 6-4, 6-2 in #1 singles.
- Senior Laila El Dessouki bested Alli Wong 6-2, 6-1 in #5 singles.
- Freshman Nikki Ong defeated Arya Jemal 7-5, 6-4 in #6 singles.
"'We got good wins at 2 and 3 doubles to give us the lead," added Choy. "Swarthmore got off to strong starts in singles, but our women responded."
