The University of Rochester women's tennis team kicked off its spring break trip with an 8-1 win over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Tuesday afternoon.
The win improves Rochester's record to 3-2 on the season, as the Yellowjackets will next face Nichols College on Wednesday at 8 am.
Rochester got off to a quick start, sweep all three doubles matches. Lauren Zickar and Camila Garcia earned the opening point at #1 doubles over Natalia Sanchez and Andrea Gebber by an 8-2 score. At #3 doubles, Darby McCall and Mariana Flores Kim were 8-6 winners over Andrea Ortiz and Raola Rodriguez while Sravya Gudipudi and Alex Wolkoff completed the 3-0 sweep with an 8-7 win at #2 over Paula Jimerez and Angelica Rivera.
In singles, the Bulldogs were only able to capture the #6 spot, as Rochester earned the 8-1 win following winning five of the six singles matches.
At #1 Garcia topped Gebber in the only three-set affair of the day, winning 3-6, 6-1, 10-7. At #2, Gudipudi was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Jimerez while Wolkoff blanked Amarilys Gonzalez 6-0, 6-0 at the #3 spot. Zickar would win 6-0, 6-3 over Angiemar Torres at #4 while McCall ended up a 6-4, 7-5 winner toping Rivera at #5. UR freshman Abbey Reinhart dropped her match at #6, falling to Sanchez 6-4, 6-4.
