CWRU Improves to 2-1 With Win Over Denison

The 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team cruised to its second win of the season, defeating Denison University 8-1 at the Cleveland Skating Club on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans improved to 2-1 on the year with the win, while Denison dropped to 0-3.

CWRU started off the day strong, taking two of the three doubles matches to open up a 2-1 advantage over Denison. Picking up doubles victories were the pairings of senior Nithya Kanagasegar and freshman Madeleine Paolucci, who defeated Denison's Lauren Hawley and Emma Alsup 8-6 in the first doubles match, and senior Peyton Young and freshman Nicole Cardwell, who picked up an 8-6 win at second doubles over Megan Hickey and Charlotte Purnode. The Spartans lone loss came in the third match, where sophomore Katrin Gurvich and freshman Mira Amin suffered an 8-3 defeat to Courtney Brown and Madeline Hart.

In singles action, Kanagasegar bested Hawley at first singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, and Paolucci claimed a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alsup at no. 2 singles. Also claiming wins for the Spartans on Sunday were Amin at third singles 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) over Hickey, Cardwell at fourth singles 6-2, 6-3 over Hart, junior Jessica Liu at fifth singles 6-0, 6-4 over Ashley Hammons and Young at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-2, over Purnode.
