CWRU Downs Kalamazoo, 8-1

The 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team defeated Kalamazoo College 8-1 on Sunday at the Markin Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The Spartans improved to 5-2 overall with the win, while the Hornets dropped to 2-4 with the loss.

Case Western Reserve swept the three doubles matches on Sunday, as senior Nithya Kanagasegar and freshman Madeleine Paolucci topped Maria Franco and Laura Hanselman 8-5 at first doubles, senior Peyton Young and freshman Nicole Cardwell bested Alex Oswalt and Lisa Johnston 8-3 at second doubles, and junior Jessica Liu and sophomore Katrin Gurvich earned an 8-2 win over Maddy Winarski and Helen Pelak at third doubles.

Kanagasegar defeated Franco at first singles in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. The Spartans next two wins also came in straight sets at third and fourth singles. Young picked up a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Winarski at third singles, and Cardwell claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Pelak in the fourth match. Rounding out the slate of victories for the Spartans were Liu over Oswalt, 6-2, 6-1, at fifth singles, and Gurvich, 6-2, 6-1 over Julia Bachmann in the sixth singles match. Freshman Mira Amin took the lone loss of the day for the Spartans, losing to Hanselman in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 at second singles.
