Marjorie Antohi and Claire Handa to Face Off in ITA Central Region Singles Final

From University of Chicago Athletics

University of Chicago women's tennis players Marjorie Antohi and Claire Handa advanced to the singles final of the ITA Central Region Championships on Sunday. They will face each Monday afternoon on UChicago's Stagg Courts for the singles title at 3:15 PM.

Antohi reached the singles final for the second-straight year after picking up a pair of wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals. She began the day with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Nithya Kanagasegar (Case Western Reserve University). Antohi then followed up with a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) victory against Ashley Lessen (Washington University – St. Louis).

Handa earned a walkover in the quarterfinals when her opponent withdrew, then dispatched Grace Deering (Washington-St. Louis) by matching 6-3, 6-3 set scores.

"Claire and Marj both turned in gritty performances today," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "The temperature was over 90 degrees, but neither backed off their game and fought for every point. For them to reach the finals in the manner they did speaks volumes about their skill and their competitive drive. I'm looking forward to watching them compete against each other tomorrow in what I'm sure will be a very high level of tennis."
