From University of Rochester Athletics

It was a strong opening day to the 2017-18 season for the University of Rochester women's tennis team, as the Yellowjackets performed well at the William Smith Mary Hosking Invitational on Saturday.

Two doubles teams and three singles players all went unscathed on day one and will compete in their respective semifinals matches on Sunday morning.

Sophomore Sravya Gudipudi led the way reaching both the A flight singles semifinals and the A flight doubles semifinals when paired with teammate Camila Garcia.

Gudipudi was an 8-6 winner over Lia Peterson from St. Lawrence in the opening round before defeating Dian Rigas from William Smith in the quarterfinals by an 8-3 score.  In doubles, her and Garcia won 8-0 in the opening round over a duo from Nazareth before dispatching their quarterfinal opponents from Ithaca by the same shutout score.

Garcia won her first round match in singles in the A bracket against Emily Wyman of St. Lawrence 8-3, but fell 9-7 in the quarterfinals to Michaelann Denton of William Smith.

Both sophomore Abbey Reinhart and senior Alex Wolkoff were 2-0 in singles on Saturday as well and paired together to also reach the A doubles semifinals.

In singles, Reinhart topped Alex Greenberg of William Smith 8-4 and then Elizabeth Karstedt of Nazareth 8-1 to reach the semifinals.  Wolkoff was an 8-3 winner over both Taylor Ginestro of Ithaca in the opening round and Annika Pornpitaksuk of Geneseo in the quarters to go 2-0 on the day.

The two then paired together for two wins in doubles, topping a team from Nazareth 8-1 before winning 8-5 in the quarterfinals over a team from host William Smith.

Two first-year players rounded out play for the Yellowjackets in the C singles flight and B doubles flight.  Julia Steinberg won her opening round match in singles, edging Hannah Kasoff of Ithaca 9-8 before falling 8-0 in the second round to Nina Lurie of Geneseo.  Teammate Yaya Wang lost in the opening round 8-1 to Kristen Zablonski of RIT.

Wang and Steinberg then paired together in doubles, winning in the first round 8-2 over a Geneseo combo before bowing out in the quarters to a team from RIT.
