UChicago Women’s Tennis Wins Second Consecutive UAA Title Over Emory

For the second year in-a-row, the University of Chicago women's tennis team faced off with conference foe Emory University in the finals of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday morning. Once again, the Maroons came away victorious by a 5-1 score to claim back-to-back UAA titles.

The No. 1-ranked Maroons (19-0 record) have now won four conference championships, all coming since 2010. The No 7-ranked Eagles dropped to 11-6 on the season.

Clutch doubles play was key to UChicago taking a 2-1 lead. Sylwia Mikos and Shianna Guo rolled through the opposition at No. 1 doubles by an 8-2 margin. The two other doubles bouts went to tiebreakers at 7-7. Claudia Ng and Perene Wang won the final five points of the tiebreak at No. 2 to prevail 8-7 (7-4).

In single action, UChicago raced ahead by grabbing five of the six opening sets. Mikos was first off the courts with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the top spot. Miranda Yuan put UChicago on the edge of victory with her 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 5. Shianna Guo then delivered the clincher at No. 2 by scores of 6-2, 6-4.

"This team is a total sum of their parts," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "Individually, they're all very good but as a group, they take each other to another level. They were resolved to handle hard better than their opponents, to enjoy the competition, and to keep perspective, and they checked all those boxes today. It's an outstanding group to be a part of and they make every day together a joy."
