CWRU Finishes Fourth at 2016 UAA Championships

The Case Western Reserve University women's track and field team wrapped up competition at the 2016 University Athletic Association Outdoor Championships on Sunday, finishing fourth out of the seven teams at the meet, hosted by Washington University (Mo.) in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Spartans finished the meet with 96.5 points, placing behind host Washington (221), Emory (173), and Chicago (161.5).  Following Case Western Reserve in the standings were Carnegie Mellon (72), NYU (52) and Brandeis (36).

Three more Spartans claimed all-UAA honors on Sunday.  In the javelin throw, sophomore Rachael Collins placed third with a toss of 35.76 meters, her second All-UAA honor of the meet after finishing third in the hammer throw on Saturday.  In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Olivia Newman recorded a career-best time of 1:03.50, placing third in the event.  Sophomore Cassandra Laios added her second All-UAA honor of the meet as well, finishing third in the shot put with a toss of 11.85 meters, after placing second in the discus throw yesterday.

Case Western Reserve also scored in a pair of relays on Sunday.  The 4x100-meter relay team of Newman, senior Emily Harker, senior Kelsie Leary and sophomore Skylar Braga finished fifth with a mark of 50.95 seconds, while the 4x400-meter relay team of junior Abby Casalnova, freshman Maria Derenzo, senior Taylor O'Neal and Newman placed seventh with a time of 4:07.78.

Other individual scoring finishes on Sunday came from freshman Jennifer Hoffmann in the 1,500-meter run (eighth, 4:51.10), Harker in the 100-meter hurdles (eighth, 16.41 seconds), freshman Mikhaylan Price in the shot put (eighth, 10.74 meters), and senior Kelsey Aamoth in the 5,000-meter run (18:22.64).

During the two-day competition, the Spartans totaled nine All-UAA honors, including conference championships from junior Temi Omilabu in the hammer throw and senior Kristen Ruckstuhl in the 10,000-meter run on Saturday.

With the UAA Championships now behind them, the Spartans will turn their focus to the home stretch of the season, and members of the squad with a chance to make the NCAA Division III Championships in late May will continue to try to improve their qualifying marks.
