After recording a pair of top-two Division III times in two
separate events at the Emory Crossplex Invitational on Sunday,
senior sprinter Electra Korn was named the National
Division III Women's Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track &
Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Korn won the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.57 seconds, the
second-fastest mark in school history, and the fastest converted
time in Division III this season by over three-tenths of a
second. She later finished second in the 200-meter dash with
a time of 25.18 seconds, also the second-fastest time in the
program's history, and the second-fastest converted time in the
country. In addition, her mark in the event was the fastest
raw time by a Division III athlete in the event this year.
Korn also competed in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing sixth with a
time of 9.29 seconds, a personal-best mark and the
25th-fastest Division III time for the
campaign.
Korn contributed 18 points towards the Eagles' team total, helping
the squad finish second at the meet. She was also named the
University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for Women's
Track following the performance on Sunday.
Korn and the Eagles are scheduled to be back in action at the
Hilton Garden Innvitational on January 30th and
31st, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at the JDL Fast
Track.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by
the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to
eight (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions, plus
the NJCAA) collegiate track & field athletes.
The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision.
