Spartans Place Sixth at All-Ohio Championships

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed at the 2018 All-Ohio Indoor Championships at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio on Saturday.

For the women on Saturday, senior Cassandra Laios claimed the title in the weight throw with a school-record mark of 17.92 meters, besting her previous school record of 17.62 meters. Laios also added a second-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 13.26 meters.

Other Spartan highlights from the All-Ohio meet included senior Danielle Kulpins crossing the finish line in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:16.34 to place second in the event. Senior Rachel Willard earned a second-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 10.67 meters, while junior Olivia Newman placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.56. Additionally, sophomore Vanessa Pasadyn contributed a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a school-record time of 2:18.80, breaking her previous school record of 2:19.17 set last indoor season.

Each of the Spartan who earned top-three finishes in their respective events received All-Ohio recognition for their performances.

The Spartans were also in action on Friday, with a group competing at the Mid-February Meet, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio.

Spartan women recording top-five finishes at the meet included sophomore Shahed Eid in the 800-meter run (first, 2:29.35), freshman Madison Vargo in the 800-meter run (third, 2:29.97), junior Ellen Sears in the 3,000-meter run (second, 11:14.86), freshman Kiera Olson in the 3,00-meter run (third, 11:16.80) and junior Marissa Miyagi in the 3,000-meter run (fifth, 11:26.96).
