Cassandra Laios of CWRU Breaks Weight Throw Record on Day One of Kent State Golden Gala

Senior Cassandra Laios of the Case Western Reserve University women's track and field team broke the school record in the weight throw en route to placing fifth out of 40 competitors on the first day of the Kent State Golden Gala.

Laios hit a mark of 17.62 meters, besting the previous school record of 17.02 meters, set by former Spartan Temi Omilabu during the 2016 indoor season. Her fifth-place finish was the highest among Division III competitors at the meet. In addition, her mark of 17.62 meters would ranks as the best mark in Division III entering the week.

Senior Nimi Gupta and freshman Emma Hammelef also competed in the weight throw, finishing 16th and 30th, respectively. Gupta hit a mark of 14.32 meters, while Hammelef recorded a throw of 12.27 meters.

Senior Rachel Willard also competed for the women on the first day of the Golden Gala, finishing 21st in the long jump with a mark of 4.72 meters.
