From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
Led by junior outside hitter Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) and junior setter Robyn Marks (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott), the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team opened play at the John Carroll Invitational with a 3-1 victory against Kenyon College on Friday evening at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
The Spartans (7-3) sweep the season series with the Ladies (2-8) and will play once more at the JCU Invitational tomorrow afternoon.
Best posted a career-best 12 kills on a .370 hitting percentage and just missed a double-double with nine digs. Marks recorded her 13th career double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs.
The Spartans claimed the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-19. Kenyon forced a fourth with a 25-22 win, but CWRU put the match away, 25-8. The fourth set featured 15 Spartan kills against just one error in 29 attempts (.483).
Junior right side hitter Danielle Witri (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) and sophomore right side Marian Barton (Custer Park, Ill./Reed-Custer) added to the attack with eight and seven kills, respectively. Freshman Jessica Justice (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine) joined Marks in the set with 14 assists.
Defensively, sophomore libero Kristen Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) posted 15 digs.
Kenyon was led by Lauren Kerr with 13 kills and Tierney McClure with 17 digs.
