The No. 3-ranked Emory volleyball team raised its winning streak
to six matches after coming away with Sunday afternoon triumphs
over Sewanee and Oglethorpe. Both contests were played on the
campus of Oglethorpe. The Eagles topped the Tigers of
Sewanee, 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-13) before closing out the afternoon
with a 3-1 (25-15, 24-26, 25-16, 25-12) decision over
Oglethorpe. Emory stands 18-2 on the year.
The Eagles had no players finish in double figures in kills, but
did hit a solid .369 (41-10—84) in the outing against
Sewanee. The sophomore duo of Shannon
Nugent and Kathryn Trinka each registered eight
terminations with Trinka hitting .400 (8-2—15) and Nugent
.357 (8-3—14). Senior Leah Jacobs and
sophomore Sarah Maher helped the cause with six kills
apiece. Senior Kate Bowman topped all players with 18
digs, and helped the Eagles to a 50-31 advantage in that
department.
Emory held a .284 (57-17—141) to .069 (35-25—144)
cushion in hitting percentage against the Stormy Petrels, the
19th match this year where it has outhit the
opposition, and was led by Jacobs who pounded out 16 kills and
finished with a .600 attack percentage (16-1—25), the
second-highest mark by an Eagle this season. Sophomore Sarah
Maher added 14 successful attack attempts, her fifth double-figure
match of the season, while junior setter Sydney
Miles dished out 42 assists and added eight digs. Bowman
turned in another solid effort at her libero post with a match-high
21 digs.
