Chicago Wins a Pair at Day One of Elmhurst Invitational

The University of Chicago volleyball team earned a pair of victories over Millikin University and Susquehanna University by matching 3-1 scores at day one of the Elmhurst College Invitational on Friday. The Maroons (12-4) pushed their win streak to eight-straight matches.

UChicago 3, Millikin 1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-22)

The Maroons struggled in the opening set, totaling more errors (8) than kills (7). The Big Blue went ahead 16-15 and held on for a 25-19 win. UChicago shook off the slow start and hit for a .333 attack percentage in the second set. The Maroons went on a 9-1 run to take a 14-6 lead, and four Millikin errors made the score 21-10. Senior middle blocker Kara Conway ended the set with a block to tie the match, 25-16.

The third set was even at 15-15 midway through, and then UChicago tallied six-straight points to grab control. The Maroons took a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 set victory. The fourth set began well for Millikin, who went ahead 10-3. But UChicago came back to tie the score at 17-17 and pulled away in the final points, 25-22.

The Maroons hit .159 in the match with nine blocks. Millikin committed 13 service errors in the match.

UChicago 3, Susquehanna 1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18)

Midway through the first set, the two teams were tied at 15-15. Then the Crusaders won six points in-a-row and went on to take the set 25-17.

Susquehanna led again in the second set at 16-12, but the Maroons ran off seven-straight points, which included three-straight kills by junior outside hitter Jasmine Mobley. UChicago evened the sets at 25-22, and then went charging ahead 15-4 in the third set. The Maroons took a 2-1 lead at 25-17.

UChicago hit .333 in the fourth and final set with 14 kills, topping Susquehanna 25-18. The team registered a .220 attack percentage in the match with nine aces.
