Carnegie Mellon Opens Marcia French Memorial With Two Wins

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team opened play at the 17th Annual Marcia French Memorial Invitational Friday, September 11 and topped Thiel College and Buffalo State College to remain unbeaten at 9-0 on the season.  

The Tartans opened play with a 3-0 victory over Thiel College winning by the scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-15. Junior Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) led the Tartans with 11 kills and hit .526.  Freshman Sydney Bauer (Allen, Texas) chipped in with nine kills while junior setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) ended with 35 assists.

Junior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) led with 24 digs and Bauer tied a season-high with 11.  Freshman Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) led the Tartans at the net with two block solos and two block assists.  

In the nightcap, Carnegie Mellon won 25-8, 25-17, 20-25, 25-15 over Buffalo St.  Bauer recorded a season-high 13 kills to lead the Cardinal and Gray as Gibbons also had double digit kills with 12.  Newton ended with 40 assists.

Jurgens and Gibbons each had one block solo and two block assists while Newton recorded a season-best 30 digs in the win and three service aces.
