Spartans Complete Sweep at Marcia French Invitational; Improve to 9-0 Overall

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team earned two more wins at home on Saturday, defeating Westminster College 3-0 in the early match and Franciscan University 3-0 in the late affair to complete a perfect 4-0 weekend at the Marcia French Invitational, and remain undefeated in 2015 with a 9-0 overall ledger.

The 9-0 start is the best by a Spartans' team under Head Coach Karen Farrell, besting the previous mark of eight-straight victories to start the 2012 campaign.

Senior Carolyn Bogart was named CWRU's representative on the All-Tournament team, after leading all Spartans with 47 kills during the four matches.  She added three aces, eight block assists and 37 digs during the tournament, while hitting .330.

The Spartans opened the day with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-13 win over the Titans, paced by Bogart's 13-kill match.  Senior Haley Kauffman added 10 kills on 13 attacks during the match for a .769 hitting percentage, while senior Robyn Marks and freshman Shannon Carroll each registered 20 assists.

In the first set of the match, tied at 14, the Spartans rallied off 11 of the final 18 points to clinch the early advantage.  It was a similar story for Case Western Reserve in the second set, when the Titans pulled within two, 17-15, but the Spartans ran away late with the game.

CWRU would save its best for the final set, hitting .379 for the frame and jumping out to a 17-6 lead to put the match out of reach for Westminster early.

Westminster dropped to 0-8 on the season with the loss.

In the second match of the day against Franciscan, the Spartans earned other three-set win, 25-14, 25-13, 25-17.  Bogart once again paced the team with 12 kjlls and a .370 hitting percentage.  Senior Katie Best contributed with 15 digs, and Marks collected 20 assists for the second-straight match.

CWRU ran out in front in the first set, scoring the first seven points of the match, and eventually building a 14-point lead, 22-8, before closing out the game.  The second set of the match was played close, but the Spartans would close the frame on an 11-3 run to push their edge to 2-0.  Case Western Reserve jumped out to another big lead in the third set, taking a 12-2 lead, en route to winning the match clinching set.

With the loss, Franciscan fell to 3-5 overall in 2015.

Case Western Reserve has now six-straight matches by a 3-0 score, and seven overall through its first nine games this season.
