Chicago Splits at Second Day of UAA Round Robin #2

The University of Chicago volleyball team swept Brandeis University 3-0 before losing 3-0 to Emory University at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2 on Sunday.

The No. 15-ranked Maroons moved to 15-8 overall and 3-4 in the UAA. The Judges fell to 3-19, including 0-6 in conference. The No. 3-ranked Eagles improved to 26-2 (7-0 UAA).

UChicago 3, Brandeis 0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-16)

The Maroons took control of the match early on and maintained their advantage for the duration against Brandeis. UChicago took leads of 13-10 and 20-17 before finishing off the first set 25-19. The second set saw the Maroons embark on an 8-3 run to go up 12-7. The advantage expanded to 22-14 and the set ended at 25-17. An 8-2 run midway through the third set was all UChicago needed to distance itself and earn the sweep, 25-16.

The Maroons swung at a .208 clip (37 kills, 16 errors, 101 attempts) for the match. They were particularly effective on serve with 11 aces, while also adding three blocks and 50 digs. Three different players tallied nine kills each – senior outside hitter Maren Loe, freshman outside hitter Audrey Scrafford and freshman middle blocker Sydney Majors. Senior setter Ragine Graves compiled 29 assists and 14 digs.

Brandeis hit .061 (25-19-98) with three aces, two blocks and 43 digs.

Emory 3, UChicago 0 (26-24, 27-25, 25-17)

The two ranked teams went at each other with efficient swings all through the opening set. They combined for 35 kills and a .322 hitting percentage. UChicago scored five of the first six points and held onto its lead until Emory tied at 19-19. The Maroons were poised to get on the board with set point at 24-23, but the Eagles took a timeout and won three-straight points to snatch it away, 26-24.

UChicago faced a five-point deficit late in the second set. But the Eagles came up clutch again to grab a two set lead, 27-25. A 10-4 run to close the third set clinch the match for Emory, 25-17. The Eagles saved their best for last in the third set, hitting .545 with 19 kills and only one error.

In the final stats, the Maroons hit .254 (43-11-126) on offense. UChicago served four aces, but also committed eight service errors. The team added two blocks and 53 digs.

Emory came into the weekend ranked second in NCAA Division III in team hitting percentage (.297). The Eagles finished with a .361 hitting percentage (52-9-119) with three aces, four blocks and 62 digs.

Loe compiled 14 kills and six digs. Scrafford added 12 kills of her own. Graves dished out 36 assists and junior libero Mary Claire Tuohy totaled 15 digs.
