Maroons Upset UW-Stevens Point 3-2

For the second time this season, the University of Chicago volleyball team knocked off a top-5 ranked team with a 3-2 win over University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at the Carthage College Invite on Friday.

The No. 13-ranked Maroons improved to 9-1 and handed the No. 5-ranked Pointers (10-1 record) their first loss of the season. UChicago previously defeated then No. 3-ranked Hope College 3-2 on Sept. 5.

UChicago 3, UW-Stevens Point 2 (18-25, 25-20, 25-18, 17-25, 15-11)

The Pointers got off to a roaring start with 18 kills versus only one error to hit .486 in the opening set. Wisconsin-Stevens Point went on to take the set 25-18.

UChicago rebounded nicely and held the Pointers in check offensively en route to 25-20 and 25-18 set victories. The Maroons outhit their opponent .244 to .125 in the two sets combined.

Momentum swung right back to Wisconsin-Stevens Point, who handily took the fourth set 25-17. With the winner-take-all fifth set, the score was tied at 11-11. After a big double block, sophomore outside hitter Frances McDonald served out the next three points, including a service ace to win the match. Senior outside hitter Jasmine Mobley and freshman rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga each contributed a kill in the ending run.

Senior setter Ragine Graves racked up a new career-high 55 assists in the five-set match. Her previous high of 53 assists was set in 2014. She ranked second on the team in digs with 23.

Senior outside hitter Maren Loe posted a double-double of 17 kills and 16 digs. She now has 1,575 career kills, which puts her six away from breaking the school's record.

Muisenga had a career-best effort on the outside with 15 kills and 12 digs. Fellow freshman middle blocker Sydney Majorsestablished new highs of 11 kills and five blocks. Freshman libero Brooks Watson collected 26 digs and served up three aces. Mobley added 11 kills of her own.

UChicago ended up hitting .188 (64 kills, 27 errors, 197 attempts) compared to .217 (60-20-184) from Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Pointers led the blocks category 12-8 while the Maroons owned a 9-4 advantage in service aces.
