Spartans Pick up Two Five-Set Wins on First Day of Bishop Invitational

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team added two more wins to its now 10-1 record in the 2016 season at the opening day of the Bishop Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

The Spartans defeated Adrian College 3-2 in the early contest, and then in the second match of the day, earned a 3-2 win over Denison.

CWRU won the first two sets against Adrian 25-17 and 25-23. After dropping the next two sets 25-23 and 25-22, the Spartans fought back to win the fifth set 15-9.

Freshman outside hitter Brianna Lemon led the Spartans attack with 18 kills, while senior middle hitter Kayla Pfaff added 14. Senior outside hitter Marian Barton and freshman middle hitter Haley Sims each recorded 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Shannon Carroll registered 44 assists. Defensively, sophomore libero Karina Bondelid recorded 24 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Noel Jeansonne added 17 and freshman defensive specialist Christine Tamura tallied 15.

After dropping the first set against Denison 25-19, CWRU fought back to win the next two 25-15 and 25-16. Denison won the fourth, but the Spartans came back to win the fifth set 15-13.

Lemon paced the attack again with a career-high 24 kills. Carroll recorded 49 assists and Bondelid contributed with 29 digs. Jeansonne and Carroll added 14 and 12 digs, respectively. Pfaff recorded a team-high five block assists.
