The New York University women's volleyball team won its sixth-straight match on Tuesday, September 20, defeating host St. Joseph's College (Long Island) in straight sets in Patchogue, LI.
NYU improved to 10-3 on the season with the victory, while St. Joseph's dropped to 2-7. The Violets' six consecutive wins are the program's most since 2013.
The squads traded points early in the first set, before the Golden Eagles scored six in a row to take a 12-8 lead. NYU battled back to tie the set at 14 apiece and eventually broke a 17-17 tie by scoring eight of the next 12 points to win the opening set 25-21.
The Violets secured the second set early, racing out to a 10-4 lead en route to a 25-10 victory.
In the third set, St. Joseph's scored the first two points and led 10-4 at one point, but NYU once again battled back. This time the Violets tied the set at 15-15 before they finished the match on a 10-3 run to win the set and clinch the match.
Inside the Box Score:
- Four different Violets recorded at least seven kills to lead a balanced attack up front. Shelby King finished with a match-best eight.
- Daryl Mitchell again led NYU in assists, dishing out 18 helpers.
- Stephanie Mao's 15 digs were a match-high, while teammate Paighton Miller chipped in with 10.
- Rayne Ellis tallied a season-high-tying six blocks for NYU.
