Chicago Tops Dominican 3-0

The University of Chicago volleyball team swept its third opponent of the season with a 3-0 win at Dominican University on Saturday night.

The Maroons evened their record at 3-3 while the Stars fell to 0-6.

UChicago 3, Dominican 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-23)

A back-and-forth first set saw UChicago go ahead 12-11, but Dominican reeled off five-straight points to make it 16-12. The Maroons rallied back to tie at 22-22 when three miscues by the Stars gave the visitors the set, 25-22. Sophomore rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga provided seven kills in the opening set en route to a career-high 17 for the match. She also notched her fifth double-double of the season with 15 digs.

The second set resembled the first with Dominican again going up midway through, this time at 14-11. UChicago had the answer with five-straight points of its own, with three kills contributed by senior middle hitter Katie LaPorte. The Maroons closed well with the final five points of the set to extend their match lead, 25-20.

In the third set, the visitors ran out to a 9-2 lead and looked to be in control. However, the Stars caught fire and eventually tied the proceedings at 11-11. UChicago recovered to take an 18-13 lead and held on to end the match at 25-23 with a final kill by senior setter Erin Risk.

For the match, UChicago tallied a .184 hitting percentage (43 kills, 20 errors, 125 attempts). The final stat line included 50 digs, three blocks and seven aces. In their three victories, the Maroons have averaged 7.7 aces per match.

On the other side of the net, Dominican hit .158 (29-13-101) along with 49 digs, seven blocks and three aces.
