Yellowjackets Split 3-0 Decisions at UAA Round Robin

Rochester split a pair of 3-0 decisions at the University Athletic Association's Volleyball Round Robin #2 on Saturday. In the morning, the Yellowjackets defeated Brandeis University, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23. Later in the afternoon, Rochester lost to 16th-ranked Washington-St. Louis, 21-25, 22-25, 20-25.

The split gives Rochester a 3-2 mark in round robin play (18-7 overall) heading into Sunday. UR will play Chicago and conclude with Carnegie Mellon. Round robin results determine the seedings for the UAA Championships – which this fall will be held at Washington University.

Against Brandeis, Amie Kohler had 34 assists and 11 digs. Clara Martinez and Shira Katz had double figures in digs, 12 for Martinez, 10 for Katz. Martinez contributed four digs and three blocks. 

Meghan Connor had 23 digs. Beth Ghyzel had four kills, four assists, and four blocks. Courtney Vidovich had six kills. Alexandra Goldman had four kills and four blocks.

Against Washington, Rochester used a 4-0 run in the first game to get within 24-21 before WU could grab the winning 25th point. In the second game, the Yellowjackets stayed close, tying the score on six occasions early. A 5-1 run by Rochester, concluding with an ace from Martinez, put UR ahead, 17-16. The teams traded points three times before a 3-1 spurt put Washington ahead, 21-20. Rochester got even at 21 and at 22. Washington closed it out with a 3-0 run.

In game three, Rochester led by four points three times, the last at 17-13. Washington regrouped, scored nine of the next 10 points, and took command.

Martinez had 12 kills, two aces, and three blocks. Alara Kocak had 10 kills. Kohler dug 16 balls, had six kills, and 21 assists. Connor had 14 digs. Vidovich had seven as did Sara Apanavicius.

Goldman added three kills and two blocks. Ghyzel contributed four kills, five assists, and two blocks.
