Washington University in St. Louis volleyball was led by seniors Rexi Sheredy and Amanda Palucki's combined 26 kills in a nonconference 3-1 victory over Greenville College Wednesday evening in the Field House during the Dig For a Cure game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
WashU improved to 20-9 on the season overall while Greenville drops to 20-7. The Bears win secured the 31st straight season that WashU has recorded 20 or more victories. The Red and Green defense finished with 71 digs compared to the Panthers 54. In addition, the Bears held the Greenville attack to a .117 hitting percentage.
Freshman Zoe Baxter tallied 18 digs on the night while Sheredy added 16 digs for her ninth double-double of the season.
WashU 3 – Greenville 1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18)
WashU jumped ahead 7-2 during the first set as sophomore Julianne Malek led the charge with a solo block and kill. The Bear lead grew to more than 10 points, 21-10, on a kill from Shannon Gurley and an ace from Caroline Dupont. A Greenville attacking error closed out the first set in favor of WashU, 25-13.
The Panthers stretched their lead to 20-13 on a kill from Sarah Watts before the Bears staged a futile comeback in the second set. WashU scored 10 of the next 13 points to tie things up at 23-all but a block by Greenville's Savannah Sells and Brittni Bell closed the second set 25-23 which evened the match at one game apiece.
Junior Lauren Fournier's service ace helped WashU pull away from Greenville in the third set. Following her ace Sheredy paired up with freshman setter Chloe Stile for a point, giving WashU a 19-13 advantage. Greenville closed the gap to within two points, 24-22, but Stile assisted on a powerful kill from Malek. The kill ended the third set as WashU took a 2-1 match lead.
WashU increased its lead to 13-5 as Baxter served for the Bears on a 6-0 run. The Bear lead leveled off at around six points until Sheredy and Dupont ended the match on a combined block.
Malek and Dupont combined for 15 kills while Malek led the team with a .368 hitting percentage. Stile totaled 45 assists and two aces during the match. Fournier and Baxter tied for the team lead in aces with three each as the Bears totaled 11 on the night.
