NYU Wins Home Opener Over Baruch

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's volleyball team defeated Baruch College in straight sets to open its home season on Thursday, October 5, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility in Brooklyn, NY.

The Violets (4-15) got off to a fast start in the match and were never seriously threatened as they went on to defeat the Bearcats (6-10) by scores of 25-11, 25-14, 25-10

NYU never trailed in the first set. Leading by only one, 6-5, the Violets scored the next five points en route to a 19-6 run the rest of the way.

The Violets fell behind 3-1 in the second set. Still trailing 6-5, NYU scored the next three points to ignite a 19-5 run that led to the 11-point victory.

The final set was no contest, as NYU jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and expanded it to 15 points at the end.

"It was good to finally play a home match," said Head Coach Jolie Ward. "Having crowd support and some familiarity with our surroundings helped with our confidence."

NOTABLES:

- Rayne Ellis (13) and Kate Glavan (12) each finished with double-digit kills.

- Nazzerine Waldon finished with a career-high six kills.

"Nazzerine has been with us for three years, but hasn't had much court time," Ward explained. "She is finally getting a chance to play in the front and did a terrific job tonight."

- The victory snapped a 10-match NYU losing streak.

"It was a good all-around effort by our players," Ward added. "Getting this victory will help our players realize that they have the talent to be successful."
