The University of Chicago volleyball team got off to a hot start at the two-day Illinois Wesleyan University Classic, winning 3-0 against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Cornell College on Friday evening.
The Maroons ran their record to 9-3 on the season, with six wins coming in straight sets.
UChicago 3, Rose-Hulman 0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-22)
UChicago made quick work of the Fightin' Engineers with a three-set sweep. The Maroons hit a blistering .458 in the first set and .354 in the second set. Overall in the match, they posted a .294 team hitting percentage with eight aces and five blocks.
Junior outside hitter Audrey Scrafford put up the biggest numbers of the night with 16 kills and swung at a .424 success rate. Sophomore outside hitter Anabella Pinton scored 12 kills.
Freshman setter Emma Griffith totaled 34 assists, seven digs and two aces. Junior rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga tied for the team lead with 13 digs while tallying seven kills.
Defensively, freshman libero Katherine Wilson and sophomore libero Anne Marie Stifter posted 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Senior outside hitter Frances McDonald served up a team-high three aces to go with her 11 digs.
UChicago 3, Cornell 0 (28-26, 25-19, 26-24)
Facing their second nationally-ranked opponent of the season, the Maroons were up to the task and came up clutch late in the first and third sets to knock off the No. 25-ranked Rams.
The service line played to UChicago's advantage once again as the team recorded nine more aces. Sophomore middle hitter Madison Pearson was particularly effective with five aces, while Muisenga added three of her own.
Out of the nine team blocks, sophomore middle hitter Madeleine Bol, Pearson and Muisenga all collected four block assists each. Pinton posted one solo rejection and three block assists.
Scrafford paced the offense once more with 15 kills and Muisenga scored 11. Griffith handed out 34 assists and accounted for a team-high 14 digs. McDonald got into double figures for digs with 11.
