Spartans Wrap Up CWRU Quad with Two Wins on Saturday

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team completed play at the CWRU Quad on Saturday with a pair of 3-0 wins, defeating Allegheny College 25-21, 25-23, 25-19 in the early match and Defiance College 25-13, 25-14, 25-14 in the late affair.

Including the team's Friday night win over Averett University, the Spartans went 3-0 during the tournament and did not drop a set over the three matches. CWRU improved to 7-1 overall on the season with the two wins on Saturday.

CWRU 3, Allegheny 0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-19)
Senior Jennifer Ngo notched a team-high 15 kills and hit a season-high .652 for the match to lead the Spartans to a sweep of Allegheny in the opening match of the day.

Ngo added three blocks and a pair of digs in the effort. Sophomore Kalli Wall chipped in nine kills and four blocks, and senior Alyssa Blessinger added a team-leading 13 digs and three service aces during the contest. Senior Ansley Yamaato led the team with 23 assists, while junior Carly Scott added 20 assists for the match.

The Spartans found themselves in an 8-8 tie in the opening set before four-straight points to take the lead for good in the frame. CWRU went on to lead by as many as six points in the opening set before closing out a 25-21 victory on a kill by Ngo.

CWRU trailed through much of the second set and were behind 19-16 before storming back with a six-point rally on Blessinger's serve to go ahead 22-19. Allegheny got back within a point at 24-23, but once again, a kill by Ngo clinched the set and gave CWRU a 2-0 lead in the match. The Spartans never trailed in the third set, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and going ahead by six, 19-13, on a service ace by Ngo. The Gators trimmed the Spartan's lead to three, 22-19, but CWRU notched the final three points of the match, including a kill by Ngo to clinch the set for the third time.

The Spartans hit a season-high .369 for the match compared to a .295 mark for the Gators. CWRU also matched its season-high for kills in a three-set match this season with 48.

Allegheny fell to 4-4 on the year following the loss.

CWRU 3, Defiance 0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-14)
Ten different CWRU players registered at least one kill and 18 total players saw action in the match, as the Spartans completed their perfect weekend with a three-set win over Defiance.

The Spartans were dominant through the match, trailing on just two occasions - 1-0 at the start of both the second and third sets. CWRU outhit Defiance .324 to .023 during the contest.

First-year Emily Goodpaster and junior Erin Murphy led the team with eight kills apiece. Scott registered a team-high 21 assists and junior Rea Marfatia paced the squad with eight digs.

CWRU took control of the match immediately, outhitting Defiance .391 to -.074 in the first set. The Spartans rocketed to a 10-3 lead in the initial set and scored the final four points in the frame to close out the 25-13 triumph. After dropping the first point of the second set, CWRU went on to score the next six points and 11 of the next 12 to go ahead 11-2. The Spartans once again scored the final four points of the set, claiming a 25-14 win on a kill by sophomore Kiya Levy to ice the frame.

With the score tied at 4-4 in the first set, CWRU scored seven unanswered points to go ahead 11-4 and took a set-high 12-point lead, 20-8, on a kill by Blessinger, before closing out the match with a 25-14 third-set triumph.

The loss was Defiance's seventh-straight to open the campaign.
