NYU Grinds Out Victory Over Franklin & Marshall

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's volleyball team defeated Franklin and Marshall College on Friday, September 8, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.

The #11-ranked Violets captured the four-set match by scores of 25-21, 27-29, 25-23, and 25-21.

In a tight first set, there were eight ties before consecutive kills by Taylor Odum and Grace Nelson gave NYU a 17-15 lead they would not relinquish. The advantage grew to as many as four points on two occasions before Camille Nazor's kill ended the set.

In set two, the Violets faced game point at 22-24 but scored the next three to stay alive. However, NYU could not convert the clinching point and eventually dropped the hotly-contested set.

In the pivotal third set, there were a total of 13 ties. NYU led by as many as three, while Franklin and Marshall had an early two-point lead. With the score tied for the final time at 23-23, Odum recorded a kill which was followed by a Diplomat attack error as the Violets eked out the victory.

The Violets fell behind by four points early in the final set, but took their first lead on Haley Holz's kill at 16-15. After Franklin and Marshall scored the next point, NYU went on a 3-0 run to grab the lead for good. The Diplomats pulled within 22-21, but the Violets countered with the final three points, ending the affair on a block by Elise Curtin.

"Hats off to Franklin and Marshall on playing a very physical match," said Head Coach Andrew Brown. "But, when the sets were on the line I feel our team was poised and made the right plays. Grace's power is hard to contain by our opponents and tonight she put up another huge performance. Her game will only continue to grow as the season progresses."

Nelson led the Violets with 19 kills, while both Holz and Ella Weider had nine. Lindsey Hirano (18) and Nelson (12) each had double-digit digs, while Ava Launsbach (23) and Dominique Drust (22) both had 20+ assists.
