Violets Take Eighth at Metro Championship

Violets Take Eighth at Metro Championship

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's cross country team finished eighth at the Metropolitan Championship on Friday, October 7, at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, NY.

NYU compiled 205 points on the day to trail Long Island University-Post by 11 points for seventh on the 5K course. Fordham University (41) claimed first out of 12 teams.

"The game plan was to get together and everyone finish the race and give a good effort," said Head Coach Erison Hurtault. "The times are going to come. The fitness is there. We just want to get everyone together and at the same time committed to each other running a good race."

Junior Emily Dethlefs led the Violets with a 36th-place, crossing the finish line in 20:31.9. Not far behind was classmate Lara Dorsky in 40th place, posting a time of 20:40.

"Emily did well considering the fact that she has had some injuries and has been unable to run for the past couple of weeks," said Hurtault. "Getting her back, having her run a good race is a really positive sign for us."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Junior Morel Malcolm placed 43rd with a time of 20:50.

- Fellow classmate Megan Davis clocked a time of 20:54.9 to finish in 50th.

- Freshman Isabella Steains took 67th with a time of 21:47.7.

"This is a tough course," Hurtault stated. "It can't just be one person having a great race. It's a team sport. You can have four running great, but if that fifth one is not putting that effort in, it is not going to work out for the team. That's what I wanted to see out there today. Get everyone to give a good effort and be committed to each other. We have a couple of girls still sidelined with injuries, but as we get them back we need to get them in the same mentality and the results will improve."
