UChicago Women’s Cross Country Earns Runner-up Finish at NCAA Championship Meet

From University of Chicago Athletics

A historic season for University of Chicago women's cross country came to a close on Saturday as the Maroons claimed the national runner-up trophy at the NCAA Division III Championship meet.

Johns Hopkins University won the national team title with 144 points, barely edging out UChicago at 147 points. This marks the best finish in program history for the Maroons – their previous top placement was fourth in 2013 and 2019.

UChicago also set a new school record with three All-American finishes in the race. The 1999 season featured two All-Americans in Rhaina Echols (1st) and Margaret Bradley (32nd).

Anna Kenig-Ziesler paced the UChicago contingent with an 11th-place showing, as she posted a time of 22:12.8 in the 6K race. She was joined on the All-American podium by teammates Lucy Groothuis and Maddie Kelly. Groothuis was 17th overall in 22:27.13, while Kelly was 36th in 22:43.2.

UChicago's scoring lineup also featured Katarina Birimac in 45th (22:47.6) and Sophie Tedesco in 60th (23:02.0).

The Maroons proved dominant all season long. They won five of their eight meets during the fall and were runner-up in the other three. UChicago's women have now finished in the top 10 at the NCAA national meet five times since 2010.
