Fontbonne Softball Uses Five-Run Seventh To Take Game One From WashU
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University softball team used a five-run seventh in game one to take the opener 10-6 over the WashU Bears. However, the Bears avoided the sweep scoring three in the seventh in game two to split the series.

How It Happened
In the first, a single from Lexi Becker, a walk to Lilly Jones, and another single from Grace Paez loaded up the bases with nobody out.
After a pop out, the Griffins got on the board on a Bears defensive miscue for the 1-0 lead. Jones came around to score on a wild pitch extending the lead out to 2-0.
The Bears plated one in the third and one in the fourth to tie the game. In the top of the fifth, the Griffins answered with three runs on three hits.
Jones started things off reaching base on an error. Three batters later, Jones trotted home on Hannah Miener's team-high fifth homer on the season giving Fontbonne a 4-2 lead. Logan Darrow added an RBI double to right scoring Madison Galczynski, who reached base on a single, giving Fontbonne the 5-2 advantage.
However, the Bears score two more in the fifth and two in the sixth leading 6-5 heading into the seventh.
Paez led off with a single and moved up a base on Gracie Morris' sacrifice bunt. After a walk, Galczynski sent a line drive shot into left center scoring Paez to tie the game.
After a walk to Darrow, the Griffins took a 7-6 lead on Kaylee Patton's RBI single to right. Patience Vandermierden added a sacrifice-fly and Becker capped the inning off with an RBI single giving Fontbonne the 10-6 lead.
That proved to be more than enough for Abby Richmond who closed the door on the Bears for her seventh win on the season.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Miener led going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and tying her season-high with three RBI.
- Paez had her second three hit game on the year going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
- Becker and Galczynski finished with two hits and an RBI each.
- Patton and Darrow added a hit and RBI apiece.
- Richmond went 2.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits.

How It Happened
It was a 0-0 game up until the fourth when Lilly Jones hit a one out double. Two batters later, she scored on Paez's RBI single giving Fontbonne a 1-0 lead.
The Bears tied it in the fifth, though the Griffins took the lead right back in the sixth. Vandermierden led off with a double and moved over to third on Becker's single.
Vandermierden scored on Jones' sacrifice-fly giving Fontbonne a 2-1 advantage. They gained some breathing room at 3-1 on a Bears error scoring Becker. In the home half of the seventh, the Bears went on for the walk-off win scoring three runs on five hits.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Becker, Jones, Paez, and Vandermieden finished with one hit each.
- Richmond got the no-decision going 4.2 innings allowing one run on six hits.
