The Brandeis women's fencing team posted a 3-2 record in their next-to-last set of dual meets of the season at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational.

The Judges opened the tournament against 10th-ranked Temple University and suffered a 22-5 defeat. Sophomore sabre fencer Ashley Jean (Norwood, Mass./Fontbonne Acad.) tallied two of the Judges' five points en route to a 12-2 overall record on the day.

In the second round the team edged former UAA rivals Johns Hopkins, 15-12. The sabre and epee squads split 5-4 decisions, with the Judges' 6-3 win in foil earning the win. Jean was undefeated in the sabre victory, while rookie Liz Feller (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. / Hendrick Hudson) was 2-0 in epee's loss. Junior Annie Kim (Morganville, N.J. / Freehold) and rookie Zimeng "Boots" Zue (Beijing, China / Peking Univ. Affiliated) were 2-1 to lead the foil squad.

In the third round, the Judges routed New Jersey Institute of Technology, 24-3, posting 9-0 sweeps in sabre and epee.

The final two rounds were the closest of the day for Brandeis. The Judges won the fourth round over Stevens Tech, 14-13, but lost in the fifth to host Fairleigh Dickinson by the same score.

Against Stevens, Brandeis topped the Ducks in sabre, 5-4, and in epee, 6-3, dropping foil, 6-3. Jean again went 3-0 in sabre, while junior Gwendolyn Mowell (Wyckoff, N.J. / Indian Hills) won all three epee bouts. Xue and Feller also contributed two points each. In the final match, Brandeis won sabre and foil by 6-3 scores, but were unable to overcome an 8-1 foil defeat. Jean and classmate Nina Sayles (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / Loomis-Chaffee) went 2-1 in sabre, while junior Deborah Abiri (Old Westbury, N.Y. / North Shore) was 2-0. Feller and junior Sonya Glickman (Valhalla, N.Y. / Valhalla) were 2-1 for the epee squad.
