NYU Competes at Northeast Regionals

From NYU Athletics

Several members of the New York University women's fencing team competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, which were held at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Sunday, March 13.

Freshman Jacqueline Tubbs produced the best finish for NYU, taking 11th place in sabre. She was the only Violet to advance to the 12-person final in any of the three weapons.

Tubbs posted three victories in the round-robin final to secure the 11th-place finish.

NYU's top finisher in foil was another freshman, Anastasiya Muravyeva. She placed 23rd overall.

In epee, it was another freshman who led the way as Hannah Bennett placed 31st overall.

"Our fencers fought hard today and really throughout the season," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "It's been a good building year with a lot of young talent. Though we didn't qualify anyone for NCAA Nationals this year, with a strong recruiting class coming in next year we'll be in a lot better position to do that in 2017."

Though the women's team did not produce a qualifier, five members of the NYU men's fencing team will be headed to the NCAA National Championships at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, on Thursday-Sunday, March 24-27.

The NCAA Championships, which combine both men's and women's team scores for the overall point competition, consists of teams from all NCAA divisions.
