The New York University women's fencing team competed in a tri-meet on Saturday, February 4, at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA.
The Violets opened up the meet by falling to #7 Harvard 19-8, but then came back to handily defeat Tufts University 17-10.
NYU was led by freshman Oliwia Szumilo. The Staten Island, NY, native went 5-1 in sabre on the day. Included in her wins was a victory over Harvard's Adrienne Jarocki, the defending NCAA national champion.
"Oliwia fenced especially well against Jarocki, and picked up a big win," said NYU Assistant Coach Lauren Willock-Wunderlich. "This should help increase her chances of qualifying for the NCAA Championship."
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
- Maria Free also fenced well in sabre. The sophomore went 4-0 for the Violets on Saturday.
- Sophomore Alisa Traskunov (4-2) and freshman Eileen Wang (3-3) led NYU in foil and epee, respectively.
"The team did an outstanding job today," added Willock-Wunderlich.
