Several members of the New York University women's fencing teams competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, which were held at Yale University in New Haven, CT, on Sunday, March 12.

Leading the way for the Violets was Anastasiya Muravyeva, who finished in eighth place in foil. Also placing for NYU in foil was Rachel Yuen and Alisa Traskunov, who finished in 19th and 27th, respectively.

NYU also was well-represented in sabre with Oliwia Szumilo coming in ninth place, Jacqueline Tubbs finishing in 12th and Maria Free placing 17th.

In epee, Hannah Bennett and Eileen Wang finished in 21st and 33rd place, while Stephanie Cunningham concluded the event in 41st place.

There was no team scoring at the event, in which teams hope to qualify their fencers for the NCAA National Championships, which are being held in Indianapolis, IN, on Thursday-Sunday, March 23-26.

According to NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando, two members of the women's team, Szumilo and Moravyeva, have qualified, while five members of the men's team will also participate: Grant Williams, Quinten Burgunder, Philip Shin, Sean Grant, and Hans Engel, while Mickey Bak will serve as an alternate.

"This is one of the great showings we've had in years," Mormando explained. "We have the 12th-most qualifiers of any team in the nation."

The NCAA Championships, which combine both women and men's team scores for the overall point competition, consists of teams from all NCAA divisions.
