NYU Opens Season at Temple; Jacqueline Tubbs Places Seventh in Saber

The New York University women's fencing team opened its 2016-17 season at the Temple Collegiate Open on Saturday, October 29, in Philadelphia, PA.

Leading the way for the Violets was sophomore Jacqueline Tubbs. The Elk Grove Village, IL, native won all four of her saber bouts in the first round and three more in the second round to advance to direct elimination. She advanced to the Round of 8, and wound up with a seventh-place finish out of 75 fencers in the weapon. Additionally, sophomore Maria Free came in 10th place in saber play, while freshman Oliwia Szumilo finished 12th.

Freshman Rachel Yuen and sophomore Anastasiya Muravyeva had strong showings in foil, finishing 9th and 17th, respectively, in the 72-person field.

In epee, two Violets advanced to the Round of 16. Sophomore Hannah Bennett tied for 11th and freshman Eileen Wang was 14th out of 72 fencers.

"The team did a terrific job today," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

- Freshman Audrey Edgington had a strong debut for NYU, as well. The Montclair, NJ, native tied for 22nd in saber. 

"We got outstanding performances from the new freshmen," added Mormando.

- Senior Cydney Williams finished 26th in saber.

- Sophomore Alisa Traskunov came in 29th in foil.
