NYU Competes at NIWFA Championships

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's fencing team competed at the NIWFA (National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association) Championships at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY, on Saturday, March 3.

Competitions were held separately in each weapon, while an overall championship team was also crowned.

"This was such an excellent tournament for the women," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "It's one of the oldest tournaments there is. A real classic."

The Violets finished in third place of 10 teams in the overall competition, having placed second in foil, third in sabre and fourth in epee.

Temple University claimed the overall championship.

"It was a great experience for our fencers and great preparation for the NCAA Regionals next weekend," Mormando explained.

Individually for NYU, Tiffany Luong took the bronze medal in foil and Hannah Bennett did the same in epee.

Audrey Edgington was the Violets' top finisher in sabre, taking fifth place.

The Violets return to action next Sunday, March 11, when they compete at the NCAA Regional Championships at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.

"The whole day was lots of fun. I'm a big fan of the Academy...even though I'm a Navy guy," Mormando quipped.
