PITTSBURGH, Pa. – La Roche men's basketball opened its 2023-24 season Wednesday night against Carnegie Mellon, but in the end, it was the Tartans ending the Redhawks seven game regular season winning streak, 92-69.

Carnegie Mellon was the early aggressor, holding a 10-4 lead over the contest's first 5:05, but La Roche would storm back with a 9-2 run, leading 13-12 with 13:05 remaining.

It would be the only lead of the night for the Redhawks, lasting 16 second when the Tartans regained the lead, one it would never relinquish.

Over a 5:27 span, starting at 12:56 remaining when the Tartans regained the lead, a run of 19-4 grew Carnegie Mellon's edge to 31-17, and at the half, La Roche trailed 46-35.

Out of halftime, the teams traded baskets early, but after the score sat at 52-40, the Tartans used another 9-0 run to open a game high lead of 21 at 61-40 with 15:27 remaining.

Over two minutes, the Redhawks trimmed the deficit to 13 with a 10-2 run, but CMU again charged ahead to push the lead to as many as 26 and never less than 18 throughout the remaining eight minutes to seal the victory.

For the game, La Roche finished the night going 24-for-63 (38.1%) from the floor, but were just 4-for-23 from three. From the foul line, the Redhawks capitalized on 17 of 22 attempts.

On the other side, the Tartans finished 35-for-55 (63.6%) from the field, and 10-for-18 (55.6%) from deep, while going 12-for-16 from the foul line.

La Roche was led offensively by junior Michael Brooks who ended the game with 18 points, four rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.

Fellow junior Joe Starzynski followed with a 12 point and four rebound performance, while freshman Bryce Epps showed out in his collegiate debut with 11 points and three rebounds.

The Redhawks have a week until they return to the floor, when they welcome Case Western Reserve on Wednesday, Nov. 15 for a 7 p.m. tip.
