(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team started the second half of the University Athletic Association (UAA) season with a home contest against seventh-ranked New York University on Friday, February 3. A strong third quarter by the Violets broke open the game as it finished by an 82-50 score in favor of the visitors. The Tartans are now 10-9 and 1-7 and the Violets are 16-2 and 6-2.
How it Happened
- The Tartans hit three of their first four shots, including two from long range, to take an 8-2 lead in the first two minutes and 36 seconds.
- The Violets scored the next eight points and there were three ties before the Violets finished the quarter on a 9-2 run to hold a 23-16 lead.
- Sophomore Catherine Or led off the second quarter with a jumper to cut the deficit to five but NYU was able to use an 11-3 run to take a 13-point lead, 34-21, with just more than half the frame to play.
- The teams traded points for the remainder of the half with NYU holding an 11-point advantage at the break.
- The Tartans turned the ball over 11 times in the first half but lost possession 10 times in the third quarter while only making two baskets for five points.
- NYU hit 12-of-20 from the floor in the third to extend their advantage to 34 points.
For the Tartans
- Or recorded her ninth double-double of the season and second straight with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
- Freshman Savannah Gibbs hit two three-pointers and finished with 10 points.
- Freshman Bethany Carlin grabbed a career-best seven rebounds.
For the Violets
- Natalie Bruns led with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting.
- Belle Pellecchia scored 11 and Caroline Peper dropped in 10.
