PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The College of Wooster women's basketball team went on the road for the first time this season and lost to Carnegie Mellon University 78-40 on Thursday.

Sophomore A'Janay Nicholson led the Scots with 12 points and seven rebounds. Junior Maria Janasko followed with 10 points and five boards.

Carnegie Mellon's Makayla Filiere led all players with 16 points.

The Scots struggled from the onset falling behind 22-8 after the first quarter where they committed nine turnovers and shot 19 percent (4-of-21) from the floor.

Nicholson connected on Wooster's first 3-pointer with 2:52 remaining in the second quarter. Senior Aubri McKoy followed with her own - a buzzer beater from between the 3-point line and halfcourt.

However, Carnegie Mellon (2-3) scored a season-high 28 points in the second quarter to lead 50-22 at halftime.

Coming out of the half, Wooster played better, winning the third quarter 18-14. Nicholson scored the final six points of the quarter for the Scots, but the Tartans answered with back-to-back 3-pointers to close the quarter.

In the fourth, the Scots failed to score.

Wooster finished 17-of-66 (26 percent) from the floor, 3-of-19 (16 percent) from beyond the arc and 3-of-12 (25 percent) from the charity stripe. The Tartans shot 45 percent (29-of-65) from the floor.

Turnovers hurt both teams as Wooster committed 30 to Carnegie Mellon's 21. The Tartans won the rebounding battle 51-42. 

Wooster is now 1-2 in the early goings of the season. They return home Saturday to face Geneva College (1-3).
