(GROVE CITY, Pa.) – The second-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team topped Grove City College by a 5-0 score for its fifth win away from home this season. The Tartans scored twice in the first half and shut out their fifth opponent this season to advance to 6-0 while the Wolverines dropped to 2-3.
Inside The Box Score
- Junior Maria Askounis put the Tartans up 1-0 with a goal in the 23rd minute after the team had put three shots on goal that were stopped by Courtney Lisman.
- Junior Gemma Jefferson earned the assist on the play after picking off a Grove City pass and driving at the goal before slipping a pass to her left for Askounis who finished to the far post with a left-footed shot.
- Less than five minutes later, sophomore Jenna Hallbeck scored her first goal of the season after picking off a defender's pass, taking a few touches toward goal and putting her left-footed shot between the diving keeper and the right post.
- The Tartans put another four shots on goal before junior Cecelia Dieterich scored in the 53rd minute. Dieterich also scored with her left foot to a shot high center over the keeper.
- Freshman Saveria Ulizzi added to the score in the 77th minute off an assist by Jefferson who dribbled around a defender near the left sideline and split the line with a pass to the far post for Ulizzi to tap in with one touch.
- Freshman Natalie Rayce added a goal in the 89th minute when her shot deflected off a defender's foot and over the keeper to the top right corner.
- Sophomore Abby O'Connor earned the win after starting and playing the first 45 minutes. Neither she nor freshman Maddie Kellogg faced a shot in the game.
- The Tartan defense was solid again, as it cleared away eight corner kicks for the Wolverines and allowed just three shots to be taken.
