Tartans Split a Pair of Matches Against Division II Opponents

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened the second part of its season with a pair of matches against two three Division II institutions, Slippery Rock University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Friday and Saturday. The Tartans dropped a 5-4 decision to Slippery Rock Friday night before defeating IUP on Saturday, 5-4. The Tartans are now 1-1 in dual action.

Inside the Results Against SRU:

  • The Tartans took a 2-1 advantage over SRU following doubles play.
  • The first point of the night for the Cardinal and Gray came at two double when the tandem of junior Zoe Angell and sophomore Anna Chow won 8-6.
  • The third double steam of sophomore Anika Joshi and freshman Elaine Qian also won by the score of 8-6.
  • The Tartans two additional points of the match came with wins at second and third singles. Junior Sarah Yang won in the two spot with sophomore Divya Venkatarama winning in the third.

Inside the Results Against IUP:

  • The Tartans fell behind 2-0 in doubles before the Cardinal and Gray top doubles tandem of senior Danna Taylor and Venkatarama claimed an 8-4 victory to make the score 2-1 heading into singles.
  • The Tartans took the first three points in singles play to take a 4-2 advantage. The first win came at five singles when Joshi won 6-1, 6-2 followed by a 6-3, 6-2 win by Yang at the top spot. Venkatarama then claimed a 6-4, 6-4 victory at three.  
  • IUP knotted the score at 4-all collecting wins at second and fourth singles.
  • Qian then won a three-set match at six singles by the scores of 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to seal the Tartan victory.

  • The Tartans will next compete on Saturday, February 17 when they travel to Denison University for a 12:00 p.m. start.
