#20 Brandeis - 2, Farmingdale State - 1

Cambridge, Mass. - Farmingdale State was defeated by #20 Brandeis, 2-1, in the opening round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship this afternoon. FSC ended their season 15-8 overall, while the Judges (12-4-2) have advanced to the Second Round and will play host-school MIT (20-1-1) on Sunday.

Brandeis controlled play in the first 10 minutes as they attempted two shots and two corner kicks, but were unable to score.

The Rams opened the scoring in the 12th minute after junior forward Julissa Martinez (Brentwood, N.Y.) had a breakaway and beat the goalkeeper to put Farmingdale State ahead, 1-0.

Both teams combined for just one shot over the final 33:51 of the first half as FSC took the 1-0 lead into the break.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Rams' sophomore goalkeeper Chloe Kensell (Monroe, N.Y.) faced four shots and kept the Judges off the board.

Farmingdale State held the 1-0 advantage until 71:47 when Brandeis sophomore forward Yasla Ngoma (North Plainview, N.J.) scored the tying goal.

With 6:45 remaining, Judges' senior forward Juliette Carreiro (Upton, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal on a header off a free-kick from junior midfielder Caroline Swan (Pittsburgh, Penn.).

FSC was held without a shot in the final six minutes as Brandeis went on for the 2-1 come-from-behind victory.

The Judges outshot Farmingdale State 11-2 in their two-goal second half.

Kensell (L, 11-3) finished with three saves, while Brandeis freshman goalie Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla.) (W, 11-4-2) had two stops in the win.
