The College of Wooster women's tennis team opened its season and dropped a pair of contests to Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday. Both were 9-0 losses.

Wooster did not get much of a footing in either match. In the first match of the day both the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles flights went down 8-0, while the No. 2 team of first-years Abby Aitken and Kimberly Nguyen fell 8-2.

Nguyen had competitive sets in her No. 3 singles flight but fell 6-4, 7-5. Otilia Oita lost 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 1 flight to Lindy Cornwall.

Sarah Duran in the No. 2 flight lost 6-0, 6-1, and Laura Haley in No. 4 lost 6-1, 6-1. Aitken fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Kendra Devereux at the No. 6 flight fell 6-0, 6-1.

In the second match, Devereux was a bright spot. She won Wooster's only set of the day at the No. 5 flight but lost the third set tiebreaker 5-7, 6-3, 1-0.

Oita fell in the No. 1 flight 6-4, 6-0, and Duran fell at No. 2 6-3, 6-1. Nguyen at No. 3, Abby Kushner Benson at No. 4 and Emma Saxton at No. 6 all fell 6-0, 6-0.

In double action, the second and third flights lost 8-1. Otia and Nguyen took an 8-4 loss in the No. 1 flight.

The women will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Denison for two matches.
