Wooster Downs CWRU in Regular Season Finale

Syd Case College of Wooster volleyball CLEVELAND, Ohio – Three Fighting Scots had at least a dozen kills, and The College of Wooster volleyball team capped the regular season with a 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-13 win over Case Western Reserve University on Saturday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

Wooster (17-8) gained a plethora of positive momentum heading into next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament with a 9-0 run late in the fourth set. Junior Sydney Fitzcharles upped her team lead in aces to 45 with a trio during the run, and the Scots' libero now has the fourth-most aces in a season during the current scoring era. Senior Katie Billetdeaux was in on four points during the scoring spree with two kills and two blocks, while junior Hayley Nash added two kills and a block.

The Scots strung together eight runs of at least three points during the other two sets Wooster won on the day. That resulted in a sideout percentage of just 46 percent for CWRU (12-12), including a clip of just 43 percent over the final three sets. Billetdeaux and junior Emily Gail led the attack with six kills apiece between sets two and three.

Billetdeaux's 15 kills marked the match-high, and the Scots' top middle is six shy of hitting 300 for the first time. Nash, who is over 300 for the year, added 13 kills, and Gail was right behind at 12. Senior Syd Case, who entered the weekend eighth in Div. III in assists per set, padded her stat line with 49, good for 1.68 per set above her season average. Nash's 14 digs marked the co-match-high, and senior Seven Townsel contributed 13 of Wooster's other 42 digs. Billetdeaux finished with six blocks, and Wooster had nine on the day.

CWRU's Rea Marfatia logged a dozen kills and a dozen digs, but she was the weak link on serve receive with eight of the team's 14 reception errors.

Wooster hit .246 to CWRU's .123.

Wooster opens play at the NCAC Tournament against Oberlin College (11-12) at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 5. The winner advances to play Hiram College (14-14) at 6 p.m. Denison University is this year's NCAC Tournament host.
