Athletes of the Week for January 10, 2023

Women’s Basketball

Katie Titus  —  University of Rochester —  Penfield, NY (Our Lady of Mercy)

University of Rochester graduate student forward Katie Titus averaged 24.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game as the Yellowjackets earned a pair of victories. She nearly recorded a triple double with 26 points, 10 boards, and eight assists in a 75-66 road win over Emory University in the UAA opener for both teams. Titus shot 52.6 percent from the field (20-for-38) in the two games.

Men’s Basketball

Ethan Edwards —  Brandeis University  —  Brooklyn, NY (Woodstock Academy)

Brandeis University freshman guard Ethan Edwards averaged 22.5 points, shooting 54.2 percent
(13-for-24) from the floor as the Judges split two games against ranked opponents. He hit eight of 10 field goals, including four of five 3-pointers, and tallied 22 points as the Judges handed 18th-ranked NYU its first loss, 81-61, in Saturday’s UAA opener. Edwards finished with 23 points, connecting on 11 of 12 free throws, in a 79-73 loss to seventh-ranked Christopher Newport University.

Benjamin Pearce —  Emory University  —  Tuckahoe, NY (Rye Country Day School)

Emory University freshman Benjamin Pearce averaged 24.5 points, shooting 50.0 percent (20-for-40) from the floor as the Eagles recorded back-to-back wins. He hit four 3-pointers and 11 of 18 field goals to score a season-high 27 points as the Eagles opened UAA play with an 87-76 victory over fifth-ranked University of Rochester. Pearce totaled 22 points and five assists in a 94-82 victory over visiting Oglethorpe University.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Rin Iimi  —  Washington University  —  Potomac, MD (Holton-Arms School)

First-year swimmer Rin Iimi won three individual events and swam on one victorious relay in a Washington University dual meet win over Rhodes College. Her time of 1:00.72 in the 100-yard individual medley ranks 14th in NCAA Division III this season. Iimi captured the 100-yard butterfly (59.52 seconds) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.81). while also being part of the 200-yard freestyle relay that finished first in 1:42.15.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Ethan Feng  —  Washington University  —  Princeton, NJ (Montgomery)

Freshman Ethan Feng won three individual events in a Washington University dual meet win over Rhodes College. His time of 52.37 seconds in the 100-yard individual medley ranks seventh in NCAA Division III this season. Feng also earned victories in the 100- (47.57 seconds) and 200-yard freestyle (1:41.99) events.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Evelyn Battleson-Gunkel  —  University of Chicago  —  Montclair, NJ (Montclair)

University of Chicago sophomore Evelyn Battleson-Gunkel won the mile run in the Maroons’ season-opening Phoenix Invitational. Her converted time of 5:02.73 ranks third in NCAA Division III this season.

Molly Laumakis  —  University of Chicago  —  Minneapolis, MN (De La Salle)

University of Chicago junior Molly Laumakis won both the weight throw and shot put in the Maroons’ season-opening Phoenix Invitational. Her mark of 16.19 meters in the weight throw ranks 10th in NCAA Division III this season, while her heave of 12.89 meters in the shot put ranks 13th this season.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

John List  —  University of Chicago  —  Las Vegas, NV (West Career Technical Academy)

University of Chicago sophomore John List won the mile run in the Maroons’ season-opening Phoenix Invitational. His converted time of 4:17.62 ranks ninth in NCAA Division III this season.

Simon Dixon  —  University of Chicago  —  Magalia, CA (Paradise)

University of Chicago freshman Simon Dixon won the shot put in the Maroons’ season-opening Phoenix Invitational. His mark of 16.20 meters ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this season.

Wrestling

Jason Geyer  —  NYU  —  Cranberry Township, PA (Seneca Valley)

Senior Jason Geyer won all four of his matches in the 174-pound weight class at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday and Saturday. He won three bouts by fall and the other by technical fall (18-0) with all three falls coming within the opening two minutes. NYU split four matches, posting victories over University of Mount Union and State University of New York at Cortland.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
