Athletes of the Week for February 3, 2020

Women’s Basketball

Abbey Lawrence  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  West Caldwell, NJ (Newark Tech)

Sophomore guard/forward Abbey Lawrence averaged 29.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game as Case Western Reserve University posted back-to-back UAA road wins at Brandeis University and NYU. She shot 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the field, 40.0 percent from three-point range (4-for-10), and 100.0 percent (16-for-16) from the line. Lawrence totaled 30 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while hitting 10 of 18 field goals and all seven free throws, in an 80-68 victory over the Judges. She finished with 28 points, connecting on nine of 15 field goals and all nine free throws, adding seven boards and two blocks, in an 87-75 win over the Violets.

Men’s Basketball

Matthew Schner  —  Emory University  —  Boca Raton, FL (Grandview Prep)

Junior forward Matthew Schner posted back-to-back double-doubles to help lead eighth-ranked Emory University to UAA road wins over University of Chicago and 11th-ranked Washington University. He shot 57.9 percent from the floor (11-of-19), 57.1 percent from three-point range (4-of-7), while averaging 14.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Schner hit six of eight field goals, including three of four 3-pointers, to score 15 points and grabbed 14 boards as the Eagles handed the Bears their first UAA loss of the season, 80-67, on Sunday.

Women’s Fencing

Anna Lanzman  —  NYU  —  Brooklyn, NY (Stuyvesant)

NYU first-year fencer Anna Lanzman posted a 13-3 record in the epee at the Eric Sollee Invitational at Brandeis University. She finished 3-0 against the UAA rival Judges to help the Violets to a 15-12 victory. NYU won four of six team matches.

Men’s Fencing

Ian Sanders  — NYU  —  Wilton, CT (Wilton)

NYU junior Ian Sanders posted a 14-2 record in the epee at the Eric Sollee Invitational at Brandeis University. He finished 3-0 against the UAA rival Judges to help the Violets to a 16-11 victory. NYU won all six of its team matches. 

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Tiffany Tseng  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Westford, MA (Westford Academy)

First-year swimmer Tiffany Tseng of Carnegie Mellon University swept the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events against Johns Hopkins University on Saturday. She won the 100 in a season-best time of 56.84 seconds and took the 200 in 2:04.45. Tseng placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.91 seconds).

Elizabeth Cron  —  University of Chicago  —  Cincinnati, OH (Oak Hills)

Sophomore Elizabeth Cron of University of Chicago was the top NCAA Division III competitor at the University of Illinois-Chicago Diving Invitational. She placed second of 23 divers on the one-meter board (263.60) and sixth of 20 in the three-meter dive (256.15).

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Jasper Lessiohadi  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Lawrenceville, NJ (George School, PA)

Sophomore Jasper Lessiohadi of Carnegie Mellon University posted a pair of season-best individual times and swam on a winning relay against Johns Hopkins University on Saturday. He recorded a split of 23.50 seconds to lead the Tartans to a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:32.05). Lessiohadi placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.55 seconds) and finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.68).

James Kyle  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Austin, TX (St. Stephen’s Episcopal School)

Sophomore James Kyle of Carnegie Mellon University recorded a season-best six-dive score of 318.00 on the one-meter board in a meet against Johns Hopkins University. He posted a mark of 333.07 in the three-meter dive.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Caira Watson Haynes  —  Washington University  —  Chicago, IL (St. Ignatius College Prep)

Washington University junior Caira Watson Haynes recorded season- bests in the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash at the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan Open. She won the 60 hurdles in 8.79 seconds, which ranks third in NCAA Division III this season. Watson Haynes posted a time of 7.87 seconds in the 60 dash, which ranks 19th nationally.

Laura Darcey  —  University of Chicago  —  Teddington, England (The Lady Eleanor Holles School)

University of Chicago senior Laura Darcey won the high jump at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Classic. Her winning height of 1.71 meters ranks third in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Nick Matteucci  —  Washington University  —  Des Peres, MO (Parkway South)

Washington University senior Nick Matteucci ran the fastest mile in NCAA Division III this season at the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan Open. He won the event with a time of 4:12.63.

Jack Allan  —  Brandeis University  —  Wrentham, MA (King Phillip Regional)

Brandeis University senior Jack Allan broke his own program record in the heptathlon with a score of 4,782 points at the Tufts University Branwen Smith-King Invitational. He won the 60-meter hurdles (8.62 seconds), tied for first in the high jump (1.87 meters) and long jump (6.65 meters). Allan placed second in the pole vault (3.70 meters) and shot put (11.71 meters). His point total ranks 10th in NCAA Division III this season.

Wrestling

Steve Bonsall  —  University of Chicago  —  Westfield, NJ (Newark Academy)

Senior Steve Bonsall of University of Chicago placed third in the 157-pound weight class at the Wheaton College (IL) Pete Willson Invitational. He finished 5-1, including a 6-4 overtime win in the third-place bout. The Maroons finished sixth of 34 teams in the oldest and largest small college wrestling tournament in the nation.

Women’s Tennis

Bin Zheng  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Miami, FL (Doral Academy)

First-year player Bin Zheng earned two points in an 8-1 Carnegie Mellon University win over NCAA Division II Slippery Rock University. She earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles after teaming with Lindy Cornwall for an 8-2 win at second doubles.

Men’s Tennis

Joshua Xu  —  University of Chicago  —  Chandler, AZ (BASIS Chandler)

Sophomore Joshua Xu posted wins at No. 3 singles and doubles to help lead University of Chicago to an 8-1 win over Augustana College. He teamed with Sachin Das for an 8-0 blanking in doubles and then earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory in singles.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
