Athletes of the Week for February 6, 2023

Women’s Basketball

Claire Brock  —  Emory University  —  Knoxville, TN (Christian Academy of Knoxville)

Emory University senior guard Claire Brock averaged 21.0 points per game, while shooting 62.5 percent from the field, as the Eagles split two UAA road contests. She hit nine of 13 field goals and all four of her free throws to net 24 points in the Eagles’ 78-67 victory at 10th-ranked University of Chicago. Brock hit four 3-pointers and both her free throws to finish with 18 points in a 78-61 loss to first-place Washington University. In the two games, Brock shot 54.5 percent from three-point range (6-of-11).

Men’s Basketball

Cole Frilling —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Coldwater, OH (Coldwater)

Case Western Reserve University senior forward Cole Frilling averaged 19.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 66.7 percent from the field, in Spartan home wins over Brandeis University and NYU. He hit four of six 3-pointers and all four of his free throws to score 16 points in 22 minutes in a 101-73 victory over the Judges on Friday, and followed that with 22 points and 10 boards in a 96-92 Spartans’ win over the Violets on Sunday. Frilling shot 60.0 percent from three-point range (6-of-10).

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Rosalie Gaudiani  —  Emory University  —  Shaker Heights, OH (Hathaway Brown)

Sophomore Rosalie Gaudiani of Emory University provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in two events at Auburn University. Competing against Power-5 athletes, she met the “B” standard in the 100- (55.71 seconds) and 200-yard butterfly (2:04.96). Gaudiani added a season-best time in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.52.

Cynthia Tang  —  University of Chicago  —  Eastvale, CA (Stanford)

Sophomore Cynthia Tang of University of Chicago earned a pair of top-five finishes against NCAA Division I competition at the University of Illinois-Chicago Invitational. She placed fourth in the three-meter event with a score of 263.80 and fifth on the one-meter board with 249.60 points. 

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Anderson Holcomb  —  Emory University  —  Loganville, GA (Loganville)

Sophomore Anderson Holcomb of Emory University provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in four events at Auburn University. He posted the eighth-fastest time this season in the 400-ayred individual medley (3:56.80) and his time of 2:00.43 in the 200-yard breaststroke would rank 10th in NCAA Division III this season if  not for his time of 2:00.30 earlier in the season. Holcomb recorded times of 55.58 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke and 1:50.51 in the 200-yard individual medley.

Logan Sherwin  —  University of Chicago  —  Harrison City, PA (Penn-Trafford)

Senior Logan Sherwin recorded a third-place finish against NCAA Division I competition at the University of Illinois-Chicago Invitational. He placed third in the one-meter dive with a score of 295.30 and added a 12th-place finish in the three-meter event with a mark of 235.25.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Aoife Dunne  —  Washington University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mount Lebanon)
Kylie Spytek  —  Washington University  —  Vernon Hills, IL (Vernon Hills)
Emma Kelly  —  Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Webster Groves)
Emily Konkus  —  Washington University  —  Sparks, MD (Hereford)

The Washington University Distance Medley Relay team of Aoife Dunne, Kylie Spytek, Emma Kelly, and Emily Konkus broke the program record at the Illinois Wesleyan University Keck DIII Select. Their time of 11:40.93, adjusted for track size, ranks first in NCAA Division III this season.

Ebun Opata  —  Washington University  —  London, England (St. Andrew’s Episcopal)

Washington University junior Ebun Opata swept the long jump and triple jump events at the Illinois Wesleyan University Keck DIII Select. Her distance of 12.10 meters in the triple jump matched her mark from earlier this season, which ranks second in NCAA Division III this year. Opata’s mark of 5.68 meters in the long jump is tied for fourth in Division III this season.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Andrew McGovern  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Lexington, MA (Lexington)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Andrew McGovern won one individual event and ran on a winning relay as Carnegie Mellon University won the 14th Annual Battle for the Obelisk at UAA rival Case Western Reserve University. He ran a personal-best time of 1:53.13 to win the 800-meter run, a time which ranks sixth in NCAA Division III this season. McGovern also ran on the victorious 1,600-meter relay.

Spencer Moore  —  Emory University  —  Rochester, MN (Mayo)

Emory University senior Spencer Moore was part of two program records at the University of South Carolina Invitational over the weekend. He broke his own mark in the mile with a time of 4:09.07, which ranks ninth in NCAA Division III this season. Moore ran the closing leg of the Eagles’ distance medley relay team that broke the 10-minute mark for the first time in program history and ranks third in Division III this season.

Henry Brandstadter  —  Emory University  —  Philadelphia, PA (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy)

Emory University freshman Henry Brandstadter established the program record in the long jump for the third time this season at the University of South Carolina Invitational over the weekend. His mark of 7.40 meters is the top distance in NCAA Division III this season. Brandstadter also posted a time of 27.53 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

Wrestling

Jason Geyer  —  NYU  —  Cranberry Township, PA (Seneca Valley)

Senior Jason Geyer won both his matches as 23rd-ranked NYU faced 16th-ranked United States Coast Guartd Academy and host Bridgewater State University in a tri-meet. He earned a major decision (11-0) over his Coast Guard opponent and a fall in 2:10 against the host school.

Women’s Tennis

Danna Taylor  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Orlando, FL (Circle Christian School)

Carnegie Mellon University junior Dana Taylor opened her spring season with a pair of singles wins against NCAA Division I Duquesne University and Division II Slippery Rock University. She earned a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) win at the third spot against Duquesne and a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles against Slippery Rock. Taylor teamed with Crystal Zhou for a 6-3 doubles win against Slippery Rock.

Men’s Tennis

Arjun Asokumar  —  University of Chicago  —  Chicago, IL (UChicago Laboratory Schools)

University of Chicago junior Arjun Asokumar picked up wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles in the Maroons’ sweep of NCAA Division II Lewis University on Friday. He earned a straight-set win in singles, 6-3, 6-4, and teamed with Pat Otero for an 8-6 doubles victory.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
