Athletes of the Week for February 27, 2023

Women’s Basketball

Grace Hynes  —  University of Chicago  —  Chicago, IL (Mother McAuley)

Senior guard Grace Hynes scored 31 points to lead 14th-ranked University of Chicago to a 71-63 win over UAA rival Washington University. She hit eight of 16 field goals, and 15 of 17 free throws. Hynes added eight rebounds and three assists.

Men’s Basketball

Cole Frilling  —  Case Western Reserve University —  Coldwater, OH (Coldwater)

Senior forward Cole Frilling netted a career-high 30 points, hitting nine of 13 field goals, as Case Western Reserve University clinched its first UAA title outright with a 95-91 road win over Carnegie Mellon University. He hit three of four 3-pointers and connected on nine of 11 free throws. Frilling added eight rebounds.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Veronica Fong  —  University of Chicago  —  West Vancouver, Canada (West Vancouver Secondary)

University of Chicago first-year diver Veronica Fong swept both boards at the nation’s largest NCAA Division III Diving Regional hosted by the Maroons. She dominated the field in the three-meter dive, scoring 479.35 points and winning by 50 points. The following day, Fong won the one-meter board with a mark of 442.40.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Jud Kyle  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Austin, TX (St. Stephen’s Episcopal School)

Carnegie Mellon University graduate student Jud Kyle brought home a title and second-place finish at the NCAA Division III Diving Regional (Region 4). He posted a pair of meet personal bests by winning the three-meter board with a score of 557.45 points and placing second in the one-meter event with a mark of 515.55.

Lucas Bumgarner  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mount Lebanon)

Emory University senior diver Lucas Bumgarner swept both events at the NCAA Division III Diving Regional (Region 2). He posted a winning score of 593.25 points in the three-meter event and 481.30 on the one-meter board.

Wrestling

Cooper Pontelandolfo  —  NYU  —  Marlton, NJ (Kingsway Regional)

NYU sophomore Cooper Pontelandolfo finished runner-up in the 165-pound weight bracket at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional in Gorham, Maine over the weekend. He won his first two bouts by technical fall and his semifinal bout by decision before falling 5-2 in the final. Pontelandolfo earned a second consecutive trip to the NCAA championship.

Baseball

Ellis Schwartz  —  Emory University  —  Cherry Hill, NJ (Cherry Hill East)

Senior outfielder Ellis Schwartz batted .500 (8-for-16) with five runs scored, five extra-base hits, and 13 runs batted in during a 3-1 week for Emory University. He recorded multiple hits and RBI in three Eagles’ victories over Oglethorpe University, capped by becoming the first player in program history to hit three home runs in a game, adding eight RBI, in a 13-2 win in the final game of the series.

John Gassler  —  NYU  —  Pittsford, NY (Sutherland)

Graduate student John Gassler opened his season by throwing six innings of one-hit, shutout ball in a 7-0 NYU win over Wells College. He walked one batter and struck out 10.

Softball

Tyler Miller  —  Emory University  —  Oviedo, FL (Hagerty)

Senior Tyler Miller went 5-for-7 with five runs scored and seven runs batted in as Emory University swept Agnes Scott College in a doubleheader. She homered twice and drove in four runs in a 13-2 drubbing in the opener, following that with a double and three RBI in an 8-0 blanking in the second game.

Mackenzie Duford  —  Emory University  —  Seminole, FL (Seminole)

First-year pitcher Mackenzie Duford earned both wins in an Emory University doubleheader sweep of Agnes Scott College. She yielded one unearned run in eight innings of work, four in each game. Duford did not walk a batter and struck out nine.

Women’s Tennis

Bhakti Parwani  —  Brandeis University  —  Ahmedabad, India (Kumkum School)

Sophomore Bhakti Parwani finished 4-0 combined at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles in two Brandeis wins on the West coast. She teamed with Rebecca Suarez for an 8-6 win and dropped just three games in singles to lead the Judges to a 5-4 win over 19th-ranked California Institute of Technology. Parwani and Suarez earned an 8-1 win and Parwani posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory in singles in an 8-1 victory over Whittier College.

Men’s Tennis

James Hopper  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Montgomery, NJ (Montgomery)

Senior James Hopper finished a combined 6-0 in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to lead Case Western Reserve University to its second consecutive ITA Division III Indoor National Championship title. He teamed with Vishwa Aduru to win three matches by a combined 24-10 score. He dropped a total of three games in four sets in posting wins over Andrew Esses of Emory and his Claremont-Mudd-Scripps opponent before defeating Abhi Ramireddy, 6-3, 6-3, in the Spartans’ 5-1 win over Washington University in the championship match.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
