Athletes of the Week for March 11, 2019

Women’s Basketball

Madeline Homoly — Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Bishop Miege)

Senior forward Madeline Homoly averaged 18.5 points and 6.0 rebounds at the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship sectional round at Thomas More University. She totaled 10 points and eight boards in a 63-46 Bears’ win over 12th-ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday before finishing her career with 27 points and four rebounds in an 87-72 loss to the top-ranked Saints.

Women’s Fencing

Tiffany Luong — NYU  —  Newton, MA (Newton North)

NYU sophomore Tiffany Luong produced the best NYU finish at the NCAA Fencing Regional Championships in Poughkeepsie, New York. She won 13 bouts in pool play in the foil to advance to the 12-person finals. Luong placed seventh, the highest finish of any Division III competitor.

Men’s Fencing

Zohaib Mannan — NYU  —  Short Hills, NJ (Millburn)

NYU sophomore Zohaib Mannan finished sixth in the foil at the NCAA Fencing Regional Championships in Poughkeepsie, New York. He won 12 bouts in pool play to advance to the 12-person finals, where he placed sixth, the highest finish of any Division III fencer.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Emily Bryson — Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Brandeis University senior Emily Bryson won a pair of titles at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. She anchored the victorious distance medley relay (11:40.06), the first NCAA relay champions in program history. Bryson also won the mile run in a time of 4:45.80, the fastest banked track time in NCAA Division III championship history.

Isabel Maletich —  University of Chicago  —  Woodridge, IL (Downers Grove North)

University of Chicago first-year competitor Isabel Maletich captured the long jump title at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. She recorded a winning mark of 5.91 meters and also placed sixth in the triple jump. 

Eka Jose — Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

Washington University sophomore Eka Jose celebrated her birthday on Saturday by winning the triple jump at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. She won with a leap of 12.16 meters, one of her two jumps that were the only ones to surpass the 12-meter mark at the meet. Jose also earned an All-America honor in the long jump with a fourth-place finish. The Bears finished second in the team standings, just two points out of first.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Nick Matteucci  — Washington University  —  Des Peres, MO (Parkway South)

Washington University junior Nick Matteucci earned a runner-up finish and ran on a third-place relay to help the Bears to a program-best fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. He broke the program record in the mile in 4:07.99 to place second and ran the final leg of the Bears’ distance medley relay.

Justin Kiefel — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Downingtown, PA (Downingtown STEM Academy)

Carnegie Mellon University freshman Justin Kiefel competed in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend. He placed 14th in the triple jump with a mark of 14.21 meters.

Wrestling

Evan Drill  — NYU  —  Neshanic Station, NJ (Somerville)

Junior Evan Drill of NYU repeated as an All-American, finishing fifth in the 141-pound bracket at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship. He posted a 4-2 record, highlighted by a major decision victory over the third seed from champion Augsburg University to secure his All-America status.

Kyle Peisker — University of Chicago  —  Elk Grove, IL (Conant)

Junior Kyle Peisker of University of Chicago earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship. He posted a 4-2 record at 184 pounds to finish fifth in the weight class.

Baseball

Ryan Adelman — Emory University  —  Short Hills, NJ (Millburn)

Junior Ryan Adelman reached base safely in all five plate appearances in an Emory University loss to crosstown rival Oglethorpe University. He finished 4-for-4 with a walk, recording the first four-hit game of his career. He also stole a base and drove in two of the three Eagles’ runs in the 6-3 loss.

Matt Levine — Case Western Reserve University  —  Boca Raton, FL (Olympic Heights Community)

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Levine threw seven shutout innings to earn the win in a 9-0 Case Western Reserve University victory over Oglethorpe University. He yielded four hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out three.

John Howard — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Clayton)

Senior right-hander John Howard pitched eight scoreless innings to earn the win in a 7-0 Washington University blanking of Luther College. He allowed five hits, while striking out nine and not walking a batter.

Women’s Golf

Grace Chen — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Sunnyvale, CA (Saint Francis)

Carnegie Mellon University first-year player Grace Chen earned individual medalist honors at the UAA Women’s Golf Championship. She posted a program-record, 36-hole score of 147 with rounds of 73 and 74 over the Hammock Beach Resort Conservatory Course in Palm Coast, Florida.

Men’s Golf

Eric Yiu — Emory University  —  Shenzhen, Guandong, China (Windermere Prep, FL)

Emory University sophomore Eric Yiu was named the Most Valuable Player of the UAA Men’s Golf Championship while leading the Eagles to their fourth consecutive title. He earned a pair of 5&4 decisions in wins over University of Rochester (4-1 in the semifinals) and Carnegie Mellon University
(3-2 in the final). Earlier in the week, he and teammate Sam Galloway posted the top Eagles’ score of 148 at the Savannah Harbor Classic.

Softball

Taylor Arends — Washington University  —  River Forest, IL (Oak Park and River Forest)

Washington University senior infielder Taylor Arends finished 6-for-8 with three runs batted as the Bears split their first two games of the season. She went 3-for-4 with a run scored, a stolen base, and two RBI in a 7-0 upset win over 18th-ranked Rhodes College. Arends again recorded three hits in a 6-4 loss to Kean University, driving in one run.

Scotty McGee — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Huntington Beach, CA (Huntington Beach)

In her first collegiate games, first-year pitcher Scotty McGee pitched 6.2 innings of hitless relief as Carnegie Mellon University played its first two games in program history. She fanned nine in 5.2 innings of work in a 6-2 loss to Beloit College and added an inning of relief with another strikeout in the Tartans’ 5-4 loss to Wheaton College (MA).

Women’s Tennis

Defne Olcay — Emory University  —  Istanbul, Turkey (Enka Okullari)

Sophomore Defne Olcay finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles to lead Emory University to victories over 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University and Millsaps College. She earned a pair of singles wins, playing one match at No. 1 singles and another at No. 3. Olcay teamed with Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico for two wins at first doubles.

Men’s Tennis

Chaz Downing —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Newport Beach, CA (Corona Del Mar)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Chaz Downing recorded two wins to help the 15th-ranked Tartans to a thrilling 5-4 win over 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University in Orlando, Florida. He teamed with Daniel Levine for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles and then, with the match knotted 4-4, earned the clinching point at second singles with a 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3 victory.

Matthew Chen —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Wynnewood, PA (Lower Merion)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Matthew Chen won all four of his matches on Saturday during the Spartans’ spring break trip in Orlando, Florida. He teamed with Zach Hennessey for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and then did not drop a game in a victory at first singles in a 9-0 blanking of University of Scranton. Chen and Hennessey earned an 8-5 win against Carnegie Mellon University and Chen followed with a comeback victory at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the 14th-ranked Spartans’ 5-4 loss to the 15th-ranked Tartans.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
